Heirloom Transkutuku "Jungle" Peanuts

Heirloom peanuts from the rainforest.

These peanuts of the rainforest are cultivated by the indigenous Shuar people of Ecuador and Peru, for whom they are a staple crop. The peanuts have been awarded a denomination of origin certification, the same sort of protection enjoyed by balsamic vinegar in Italy or Champagne in France that says: “you can only make this here.” They go by a number of names. The Shuar people call them Nuse. The spanish name for them is Maní De Transkutukú. And in English, you may see them called Fastigiata Pin Stripe Peanut or Jungle Peanut.

They’re a bit more almond shaped than round and oblong, and they’re striped with dark mahogany-colored swaths that make them far more intriguing to look at than your normal goober. With a flavor that’s a cross between a peanut and an almond, these savory nuts are worth the protection. A big hit on cheeseboards and snack bowls everywhere.
