Rancho Meladuco Medjool Dates

Ari's favorite new food of 2021.

Ari co-founded Zingerman's.

I feel fortunate to have stumbled onto the delicious dates from the marvelous Rancho Meladuco, located in the Coachella Valley in California. They’re ripened carefully on the tree to maximize their natural sweetness. Joan Smith and her team then dry them very gently, leaving them with higher moisture to enhance the dates’ natural flavor. It also makes them much more difficult to pack and ship, but I’m happy to pay for that.

The dates are so marvelously good that I keep coming back to them in all different ways. I nibble one alongside my coffee in the morning. I halve them, pit them, and stuff them with peanut butter or blue cheese for an appetizer, or dark chocolate for dessert. I chop them and add them to salads. I could eat the whole box in a matter of hours if I’m not careful.

Storage tips
To keep the dates in peak condition, it's best to keep them stored in the refrigerator—left at room temperature, they'll dry out more quickly. If you want to keep them for longer than a few months, they freeze beautifully. When you're ready to eat them, bring them out of the fridge for 20 minutes or so to warm up for the best texture.
