Jainaba Jang has introduced many of us to the alluring, flavorful sauces of her company Kitchens of Africa and her latest sauce is going to be a winner, too. The recipe is inspired by Shidni, a traditional Somali chutney used for special occasions and everyday eating.
It's made from a base of tamarind and dates or mangoes, plus a bevy of spices like chiles, cardamom, clove, ginger, garlic and more. Sounds exotic, but it’s familiar to use. A bit sweet with a smooth hint of spice, treat it like a sauce for barbecue or enchiladas and give your regular grill fare an extra flavorful splash. Or serve it up alongside your homefries for a flavorful ketchup replacement. Your fellow diners will go gaga.
