Organic Sudachi & Blend Jam from Japan

As you might be able to guess, all of these products are from Japan and they’re all citrus in some delicous form. We’ve been tasting (and loving) a lot of “new to us” flavors coming from countries like Taiwan, Korea, and especially Japan.

Sudachi sort of look like limes and come from the Tokushima Prefecture of Japan. They’re tart and really aromatic.

While they feel familiar, their flavor is often distinctly different from what you might expect. Sudachi sort of look like limes and come from the Tokushima Prefecture of Japan. They’re tart and really aromatic. This sudachi jam is blended with yuko (another new citrus flavor to us), lemon and sugar to create a great example of what I’m talking about. Most citrus jams or marmalades in particular can be sharp and bitter, but this one is bright, clean and nearly refreshing.

The aroma is the first thing you notice…it has a perfumey/flowery scent that makes you think you’re walking through an citrus grove. It’s sweeter than you might expect—at least it was sweeter than I expected—but it’s not cloying or anything. It’s light and lovely. Spread it anywhere you’d use preserves or marmalades and enjoy the strange familiarity of new flavors.

I am crazy for this as a snack. You simply chew a few when you’re idle and they’ll brighten your day. They’re a bit sour, a bit sweet, a bit bitter, and all the way delicious.

You can chop ’em up and add ’em into cookies or pancakes or crepes (instead of chocolate chips or blueberries). Baked goods in general will love their inclusion or you could even make a fresh and bright salad with the sweetened dried peels mixed in.

All in all, they’re addictive, delicious, and most of all fun. It’s impossible not to think of summer days and citrus gardens in the sun every time you take a bite.
