Tamarind Date Sauce

Tamarind Date Sauce

Somali sweet heat.

Hawa Hassan, the founder of Basbaas Somali Foods, was born in Mogadishu. When she was a child, Somalia was overtaken by civil war. Hawa fled—first to Kenya, and later to Seattle. As an adult, she eventually landed in Brooklyn, but she missed the foods of her homeland. She set out to recreate them, and we all get to enjoy the fruits of her labors.

This spicy, cheek flushing yet sweet and delightfully fruity sauce is made from a base of tamarind and dates. It’s a complex addition to dressings and marinades. Or drizzle it over chicken, pork, steak, grilled fish, anywhere you’d like to add a punch of fruity heat to your cooking.

"[Hawa] has recaptured the flavors of her native land in jars of condiments: dense, dark tamarind sauce that defines sweet and sour."
Florence Fabricant, The New York Times

"Tamarind date sauce is considered the go-to condiment in Somalia, and it’s easy to see why... Basbaas’s version is slightly sweet and smoky, with a gentle, warming heat that shouldn’t scare off the spice-averse. The thick, mayonnaise-like consistency is ideal for spreading on toast, but can also be thinned out and drizzled over grain bowls and salads."
