Shiro Plum Preserves

Girl meets dirt, makes jam.

After leaving the hustle of Manhattan for the quiet of the San Juan islands off the Washington coast, Audra Lawlor discovered a bounty of beautiful, heirloom produce—and soon started making jam. She uses tons of local fruit and a minimal amount of sugar.

The sweet, yellow shiro plums used in these preserves come from Audra’s own land and neighboring farms. Then Audra adds a small amount of mint, which seems to enhance the flavor of the plums, not mask it, creating one of the more complex, unique preserves I’ve tried in a long time.
