It's funny how starting a second (or third) career can lead to national recognition and a hot new food trend.

Marcia Nodel had an empty nest. The kids were grown, out of the house and married and as she says: “I don’t play cards.” Marcia was looking for something to do, so she took her family recipe for making pickles and started a business in suburban Detroit. Her hobby business was doing pretty well at farmer’s markets and local grocery stores, then she won the Good Food Award in 2014 for her pickles. That’s when things really took off.

Marcia has expanded beyond pickling cucumbers since then, sourcing her raw ingredients from local farms and processing them in small kitchen in Hamtramck (downtown Detroit, really). I love these cherry poppers. Marcia takes sweet grape tomatoes, ices them overnight (“that keeps them crisp,” Marcia says), then pickles them in her secret recipe before hand packing each jar.

Great on a relish tray, tossed into salads, or as garnish for your daily Bloody Mary.
