Peri Peri (or piri piri, depending on what sliver of the globe you’re standing on) is originally a Portuguese hot sauce that spread its flavorful and influential wings as the Portuguese empire sailed around the world.
This particular iteration comes from the east coast of Africa. Several different red chilies are blended with a base of lemon juice, garlic, pepper and parsley. It has quite a bit of heat, but it still has a nice flavor that isn’t overpowered by the chiles. I consider it well balanced because it has heat AND flavor.
Great with grilled meats. Especially chicken.
