This is one of those products that didn’t sound that appealing to me at first. Smoked olive oil? Smoked flavors should go with savory things like meat, I thought, not oils.
But we’re foodies. Just because we’ve never tried something before doesn’t mean we’re not going to like it, even if it sounds a bit strange. (That’s a lesson I’m still trying to teach my daughter.)
After tasting the oil, my preconceived misconceptions were dashed. It’s really good. Unique for sure, and not something you’ll use as an every day oil, but its flavor is excellent: peppery, a little grassy and slightly bitter, but the smoky finish makes it an interesting experience. Usually when things are smoked, the heavy smoke flavor overwhelms anything else going on. Not with this oil. It adds sweetness, in fact. There are notes of vanilla and burnt sugar that are really wonderful and delightful to find in any oil, let alone one that’s been smoked.
The extra virgin olive oil is infused with naturally produced smoke from a mix of oak, beech and birch wood. Each wood imparts its own flavor to the finished oil.
Use this as a finishing oil, adding it to grilled meats or vegetables to highlight the flavors. Try it drizzled over fresh goat cheese with some good crusty bread and you’re in business.
