L'Estornell oil is made from hand-picked, organically grown, cold-pressed arbequina olives from the estate of the Vea family, just outside the village of Sarocca de Lerida, near Barcelona. While not a household name in America, the Veas have been making olive oil for decades and their products are known all over Spain and Europe.
Arbequinas are tiny, the size of shelled hazelnuts, the color of khaki to light brown. They have an addictive, nutty, fennel-scented flavor, that's prompted olive eaters to call them "the caviar of the olive world." (We sell them for eating, too.)
The 2009 harvest of L'Estornell has a fruity, sweet, buttery flavor. There are hints of green olive and a slight pepperiness in the finish. It's excellent for salads, sautéed vegetables, fried eggs or seafood.
This olive oil is certified organic.
